Daniel Martinez will enter his fourth year as Trinity’s Head Strength & Conditioning Coach and as Coordinator of the Patrick Stumberg Sports Performance Center in the 2020-2021 academic year.
He works extensively with Trinity’s student-athletes. In 2020, women’s track & field senior Androniki Defteraious and men’s basketball sophomore Jack Williams were elected women’s and men’s Strength & Conditioning All-Americans by the National Strength & Conditioning Association. Daniel also coordinates a program recognizing student-athletes as “Strength & Conditioning Athlete of the Month.”
He also is the coordinator of a Trinity conference on sports science and strength & conditioning, which brings top professionals in the field on campus to share best practices.
Daniel started the position with over 10 years in the performance field. Most recently, Daniel was the U.S. consultant for ForceDecks, which works collaboratively with strength & conditioning and sport science departments internationally. Included on that list are the NCAA, NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL and the United States Olympic Committee.
His mission with ForceDecks was to drive education and support of these programs regarding performance profiling, athlete monitoring, and return-to-perform (RTP) process. Daniel worked with these programs to provide support and to enhance the quality of physical preparation based on the integration of dual force platform technology. In that role he has worked directly with the University of Louisville (KY), University of Virginia, Penn State University, the University of Texas, Saracens Rugby, New Zealand Hurricanes, USA Beach Volleyball, the Golden State Warriors, the Memphis Grizzlies, the Houston Rockets, the Detroit Pistons, the Miami Dolphins, the Philadelphia Eagles, and the Arizona Cardinals, to name a few.
No stranger to Trinity Athletics, Daniel served as an independent contractor strength & conditioning coach with the Tiger volleyball team. Additionally, Daniel worked with Elite Volleyball Performance and was club owner and performance coach of Bexar Volleyball. Both organizations were located in San Antonio. He was honored in 2011 by USA Volleyball with the Robert Lindsay Meritorious Service Award. The accolade recognizes the Club Director of the Year for USA Volleyball’s Lone Star Region.
His sports performance work is diverse, as Daniel has prepared athletes for competition demands at more than 25 NCAA athletics programs. He was also a consultant for the prestigious Roddick Tennis Academy.
He earned a bachelor’s degree from Texas State University in December 2010, with a major in Exercise and Sport Science, and a minor in Sport Psychology. Daniel received a master’s degree in Strength and Conditioning from Edith Cowan University, located in Perth, Australia, in November 2016.
Daniel is certified by the National Strength and Conditioning Association as a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), by the Australian Strength and Conditioning Association as a Level 2 S&C Coach, and is certified by USA Weightlifting as a Sports Performance Coach (SPC). A former track & field competitor at the University of Texas at San Antonio, Daniel was also an Olympic weightlifter for eight years.
