An award-winning teacher and Soros Senior Justice Fellow, she holds a joint appointment as a senior lecturer at the LBJ School and the School of Law at The University of Texas at Austin.&nbsp;Her areas of specialty include independent oversight of correctional institutions, prison conditions, the management of youths in custody, and juveniles in the adult criminal justice system.&nbsp;She co-chairs the American Bar Association&#8217;s Subcommittee on Correctional Oversight and helped draft the ABA&#8217;s Standards on the Treatment of Prisoners.&nbsp;She has written numerous articles about correctional oversight, including&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/digitalcommons.pace.edu\/plr\/vol30\/iss5\/21\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a 50-state inventory of prison oversight models<\/a>, as well as many reports on juvenile justice that have received national attention.&nbsp;Her&nbsp;TEDx&nbsp;talk&nbsp;&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5YHhz5MIKHM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Why are we trying kids as adults?<\/a>&#8221; was named a&nbsp;TEDx&nbsp;Editor&#8217;s Pick in January 2015.&nbsp;Prior to entering academia, she served as a federal court-appointed monitor of conditions in the Texas prison system, as the policy director of Texas&#8217; sentencing commission, as general counsel to the Texas Senate Criminal Justice Committee and as an independent consultant to justice system agencies across the country.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":1708,"template":"","class_list":{"0":"post-557","1":"speaker","2":"type-speaker","3":"status-publish","4":"has-post-thumbnail","6":"entry"},"acf":{"speaker_title":"Attorney and Senior Lecturer at the University of Texas at Austin","speaker_last_name":"Deitch","speaker_classification":["Current Staff"]},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/podcasts.la.utexas.edu\/this-is-democracy\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/speaker\/557","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/podcasts.la.utexas.edu\/this-is-democracy\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/speaker"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/podcasts.la.utexas.edu\/this-is-democracy\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/speaker"}],"version-history":[{"count":3,"href":"https:\/\/podcasts.la.utexas.edu\/this-is-democracy\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/speaker\/557\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":1710,"href":"https:\/\/podcasts.la.utexas.edu\/this-is-democracy\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/speaker\/557\/revisions\/1710"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/podcasts.la.utexas.edu\/this-is-democracy\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/1708"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/podcasts.la.utexas.edu\/this-is-democracy\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=557"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
