He is an associate professor in the departments of Neurology and Population Health at Dell Medical School. <\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Prior to coming to Dell Medical School, Steffensen was the chief of innovation for the Military Health System and also served as the personal adviser to the Army surgeon general. His past experience includes management of the largest health IT research and development program within the Department of Defense focused on electronic health records, mobile health and medical device technologies. Additionally, he was as a founding board member of the Johns Hopkins University Military and Veterans Health Institute where he represented Johns Hopkins on the Obama administration Joining Forces initiative. <\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>During his military career, Steffensen gained a reputation for innovation in community and global health domains as well as being a passionate advocate for the needs of the combat medic. He played a major role in early interoperability efforts leading the first Department of Defense Nationwide Health Information Network initiative and Virtual Lifetime Electronic Record program between the Department of Defense and Department of Veterans Affairs. <\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Steffensen has also been a lifelong advocate for the arts and humanities, focusing on the importance of medical humanities to clinical practice. She graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a bachelor\u2019s degree in Public Health. Since joining the lab in February 2019, Madalyn has worked on study protocols and processes for the Platano ATX study. Madalyn is interested in the intersection between health behavior, nutrition, and healthcare systems.
