Resilient Middle East Language Programs

Strengthening Middle East Language Programs through Inter-Institutional Cooperation

The University of North Carolina Language Exchange

by Dr. Mike Turner, University of North Carolina Wilmington, Assistant Professor

This presentation provides an overview of the University of North Carolina Language Exchange, a course- sharing system that allows students at any of the UNC System’s 16 universities to participate virtually in language courses offered on another campus, and how it benefits the teaching of Middle Eastern languages throughout the state.

About the Presenter

Mike Turner is an assistant professor in the Department of World Languages & Cultures at the University of North Carolina Wilmington.

I work on theoretical and applied linguistics, and have taught Arabic at the beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels.

I am particularly interested in historical processes that lead to dialect diversification. My doctoral dissertation looked at the concept of definiteness and how it is expressed in different Arabic varieties.
