Affiliated faculty in Creative Writing, author of eight\u00a0collections of poetry, three\u00a0critical studies, and a novel,\u00a0he twice served\u00a0as\u00a0Director of the Creative Writing Ph.D. Program in English (2006-2011, 2015-2017). His most recent books\u00a0are:\u00a0<em>Let It Be Broke (Four Way Books,\u00a0<\/em>2020) a collection of poems focused upon racial dynamics in contemporary life;\u00a0<em>Another Kind of Madness\u00a0<\/em>(Milkweed Editions, 2019), a novel set\u00a0in Chicago and coastal Kenya\u00a0and tuned to the sound and structure of soul music, especially the songs\u00a0of Chaka Khan;\u00a0<em>Live at the Bitter End\u00a0<\/em>(Saturnalia Books, 2018); \u00a0<em>Let&#8217;s Let That Are Not Yet : Inferno<\/em>\u00a0(National Poetry Series, Fence Books, 2015)\u00a0and\u00a0<em>&#8216;Who Can Afford to Improvise?&#8217;: James Baldwin and Black Music, the Lyric and the Listeners\u00a0<\/em>(Fordham University Press, 2015). Other recent works are\u00a0<em>Visiting Hours at the Color Line<\/em>\u00a0(National Poetry Series, Milkweed Editions, 2013),\u00a0<em>But Here Are Small Clear Refractions<\/em>\u00a0(Achebe Center, 2009,\u00a0<em>Kwani?<\/em>\u00a0Trust, 2013) and\u00a0<em>Winners Have Yet to be Announced: A Song for Donny Hathaway<\/em>\u00a0(U Georgia P, 2008).
