He is also the founding director of the LBJ School&#8217;s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/csrd.lbj.utexas.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Center for the Study of Race and Democracy (CSRD)<\/a>. His career focus has been on &#8220;Black Power Studies,&#8221; which encompasses interdisciplinary fields such as Africana studies, law and society, women&#8217;s and ethnic studies, and political science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prior to joining the UT faculty, Dr. Joseph was a professor at Tufts University, where he founded the school&#8217;s Center for the Study of Race and Democracy to promote engaged research and scholarship focused on the ways issues of race and democracy affect people&#8217;s lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to being a frequent commentator on issues of race, democracy and civil rights, Dr. Joseph&#8217;s most recent book is&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basicbooks.com\/titles\/peniel-e-joseph\/the-sword-and-the-shield\/9781541617858\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Sword and the Shield: The Revolutionary Lives of Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr.<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;He also wrote the award-winning books&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/us.macmillan.com\/books\/9780805083354\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Waiting &#8216;Til the Midnight Hour: A Narrative History of Black Power in America<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abebooks.com\/9780465013661\/Dark-Days-Bright-Nights-Black-046501366X\/plp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dark Days, Bright Nights: From Black Power to Barack Obama<\/a><\/em>.
