I hope y’all keep that. All right. So welcome. Welcome to the summer school edition of the leadership innovation ventures and entrepreneurship podcast. This is episode 30. Woo. We made it. Woo. It’s a milestone episode. You know what else? It’s been a minute too, though.

It also has been a minute. Cause I know they’re wondering, like we haven’t heard anything for you all [00:01:00] since February and it’s been a lot of things. Yeah, a lot of life, a lot of changes in transition and. All kinds of stuff. First off, how have you been?

Etinosa: You know what, um, I’ve been good. I’ve been good. I, I take what things one day at a time I do a lot of size, uh, a lot of size happen throughout the day, but over since February, you know, things are good.

Things are picking up for me over the apartments right now. So a lot of size. Happened

Brandon: throughout the day. Understood. understood. I mean, I got promoted. What since last time I mean, since, oh my gosh. I was in April. Yeah. And so I was hoping we could get in the studio before then, but then, you know, spring break graduations, and I looked up and I mean, let mean the don’t get me wrong.

Y’all I’m happy to be promoted, but I mean, it was all a email. Yeah. Like it was, I, I looked in Workday one day and it was like, Oh, and then my boss calls me and is like, Hey, congratulations. And I’m like, all right’s up. That things have were so busy cuz we had searches going on in the department. Yeah.

Spring break NASPA. Yeah. [00:02:00] Uh, I served on the undergraduate student conference through NASPA as well. I was on the, I was a sub committee chair. Cool. And that, and closing out the years, student leader, celebrations, graduations and. We finally made it into the studio now. Yeah. So moving and grooving y’all this is, we’re so excited to be back before you all.

And uh, at the time of this recording orientation is Monday. Yeah. Can we stop and pause and talk about how did we get here so fast? I don’t know. Cause it seems like graduation was a day ago. Yeah, it’s been what two, almost three. Almost three ways. Almost three. Wow. And in here we are, it’s June. Orientation starts next week.

And so for those of you who may be listening to us for the first time, or for those of you wondering what are y’all talking about? So new student orientation happens every summer, first, full week of June, and shout out to our friends over in, uh, new student services. They are rocking and rolling if you’re not on campus, or if you’re walking around wondering.[00:03:00]

Why are all those cone cones up in the parking garages? Yeah. What are all these barricades up for? What is this signage that’s because they’re going to. Thousands of people. Yes. That aren’t even enrolled in classes yet. Yes. On campus starting on Monday and for the next seven or so weeks after that, there will be people there will be conferences.

Yeah. There’s there’s life. So it’s so

Etinosa: exciting to see all those people, like there’s, there’s like the busyness of the academic year, but the summertime, I feel like there’s. Excitement that happens with like new students coming onto campus, which is really great. And then you have like people who are on campus, who are experiencing the university for the first time with conferences and events.

And that’s just like a different energy of being like, wow, we’re really showing you all the greatness of the 40 acres.

Brandon: And it’s also, I, I, I was telling, uh, the, the crew here, uh, shout out to our liberal arts instructional technology studio crew, uh, helping us get this episode put together. But I was telling them earlier that.

I want the life [00:04:00] back. Yeah. I’m loving, I’m seeing people and energy because the last two summers. That hasn’t been the case, unfortunately. And so now, I mean, we’ve got in housing and dining, we’ve got 120 830 conferences that’ll be going on. Wow. Then we’ve got orientation sessions. We’ve got summer school admissions is doing tours all over campus.

There are literally tours going on as we speak. And so not only that construction. Yeah. I’m happy to have the life back. Cuz last summer it was not. It was not this, there was like a handful of people walking around people still trying to figure out, can I be here? And it’s like, yes, say hi, please walk by.

So I’m happy to see people here. And I love what you said about, you know, the folks who are getting the different feel and vibe for campus before they get here in the fall. Talk to me about why do you feel like that’s important? Tell the audience why that’s important. .

Etinosa: I always go back to my time in undergrad and doing like an orientation.

I was like, you it’s, it’s a new trajectory that you’re going down. Right. Like a lot of our students are graduating high [00:05:00] school and they’re coming to college for the first time and they’re experiencing something new. And I think like going to college is such a. Awesome experience. If you get to do that, and it’s just, you just see the excitement, there’s so many possibilities that can happen for this one person or all these thousands of students here.

And they chose to come to the university of Texas at Austin. And you’re just like, wow. Like from here to four years from now, like, who knows what’s gonna happen? You know, and who you, who knows what you’re gonna meet and like, who knows what you’re gonna do, that’s gonna change the world.

Brandon: Ah, see, I see what you did there.

I see what you did there. And I like the fact that this is an opportunity for this for, for me as a parent, I, I, I’m starting to have to think about this. This is the beginning of the letting go process. Mm-hmm . And so, you know, one of our learning goals in housing and dining is self-management. Yeah, it’s the first, it’s the first goal.

And for many parents, this is. Starting point for the letting go process of letting their student become an adult. And so for me, the actual moment where that happens [00:06:00] is when they first get here for move in mm-hmm and they’re in line. Yeah. And we’re like, no, no parents you’re over here, the student and, and just watching the, not the heartbreak.

I don’t wanna say that, but watching the, oh my gosh, it’s real now moments happening. Those are the things that, for me, I’m like, Just letting reassuring parents. We got it from here. At least this part. Yes. We we’re gonna be here every step of the way for the next couple of years. And then we see ’em at graduation.

So it’s out with a class that came to us a couple of years ago. Yeah. And it’s in with another one. And so for me, you know, I’m happy to see UT 26 coming in. So shout out to UT 26 and. For UT 22 that just graduated. I’m like, you know, I was here. Yeah. For that. I was here for them. I was here for U uh, UT 21 as well.

That was my first class Uhhuh. So now it’s it’s here. It’s here. Oh my gosh. Wow. What else has gone on since the last time we met? Oh, goodness. So many things we’ve had student leaders celebrations. Yes. That was awesome. Celebrating our student leaders. And we’ve had, um, the end of [00:07:00] year banquets and lunches and dinners and breakfasts and commencement as happened.

And we had Emmanuel aro, uh, doing the, uh, keynote mm-hmm at graduation. And one of our students from housing get down. One of our RAs, our quality Davis, uh, I’m so sad. She’s getting ready to do, teach for America. Oh, uh, shout out to Aqua, uh, gonna be down there in Houston, I think in Eisenhower. Okay. Actually, so, um, that’s incredible.

But man then before we know it, move in and then move in. I mean, at the apartments y’all have y’all are on a different schedule, like, so, so move in for you all is. Next month, right? Yeah.

Etinosa: Like that’s the busy job. Yeah. We have a lot of our students moving out, um, at the end of this month and come July 1st, come August 1st, come September 1st.

Like, yep. We’ve got waves of students moving in. Um, and it’s really exciting. I think like, from the perspective of seeing our graduate students, trying to transition into grad school at UT is definitely an interesting experience to watch too, because they don’t have that robustness of their orientation as [00:08:00] undergrads.

Yeah, yeah. Yeah. Um, but from a housing perspective, you know, we try to. Help them navigate just living because sometimes that’s like the most important thing I was like, how do I get a roof over my head? Yes. Um, and settle down and then go right into the academics. Right. Mm-hmm um, it’s definitely an exciting time.

We’ve got a lot of great things that are gonna happen. Um, that I’ve been a part of. We do. So I’m, I’m a hype woman for the university apartments. So if you ever see me in person. Tell you about the

Brandon: university. So I was bragging on you all yesterday. I was meeting with some of our friends over at cap, Metro mm-hmm and they were so excited.

I was like, Hey, one of my colleagues, you , uh, has this idea for a program that they want to do. And they were like, oh, cap, Metro wants to be a part of that. Yeah. So I dunno if I, yeah, I could say that on there. Yeah. So, I mean, cuz. Yeah. They, they just, they just wanna be a part of the, the program and they wanna let people know about, Hey, here’s the new routes?

Here’s the apps. Here’s the maps and cap. Metro has some really cool t-shirts so that’s the other thing I lo I, I knew, I knew there was something else I wanted to talk about. You know, me, everybody who knows me, knows I’m like, [00:09:00] Avid graphic T enthusiast. It doesn’t have, if it’s got graphics on it, I love it.

If it’s blank, like the one I have on right now, I wanna wear it. Yeah. Um, cap Metro’s t-shirt game is pretty nice. I mean, it’s a one, I mean, I’ve been getting stuff from them since I got here in 2017. Mm-hmm . And they, they come to RA training. They do the, uh, resource fairs yeah. At, uh, party on the Plaza and all of that.

And so new students make sure you go to party on the Plaza in the fall. I’m, I’m a living spokesperson for like all things on campus here at UT. But I will say. The t-shirt game with cap. Metro is like top tier, but we were talk, I was talking to some colleagues the other day and we were rating the offices and the partners on campus who have the best t-shirts.

Okay. So everybody on campus has some really cool ones, but I’m curious, what do, who do you think has the best t-shirts on campus?

Etinosa: I’m. I don’t get a lot of t-shirts from other campus partners. I will say that you gotta fix that. I know I randomly got a t-shirt from, I [00:10:00] wanna say maybe Rex sport. I don’t know who runs the Longhorn

Brandon: race.

It’s us. Rex sports. Yeah.

Etinosa: so that was nice.

Brandon: Funny. You should say that. Because everybody who knows me knows Rex sports is, is a one they’re they’re they’re they’re the number one t-shirt distributor on campus to me. Okay. Now with that, I mean, they’re, they’re a division partner. Uh, we report up through Tom Dyson.

So shout out to Tom Dyson, uh, on retirement. By the way. Um, but yeah, I am a fan of their shirts because they got that Nike money. That’s

Etinosa: what I’m saying.

Brandon: They have the Nike, yeah. All their t-shirts are dry fit. Like every shirt I’ve ever gotten for red sports, like three or four years ago when it was the good things, um, to those who sweat shirts.

Oh, with they were gray. Yeah. And they had the Nike check. They were just giving them away for free. If you followed them on social media and you showed proof of it. Wow. They give you that one. And then they had a white party on the Plaza. And so they got free advertising at. Free for students. Yeah. Uh, to get the shirts and every student was walking around with the party on the Plaza, Dr.

[00:11:00] Nike dry fit. And then the gray, uh, good things come to those who, sweat shirts. Wow. And everybody wears those. Yeah. And they don’t shrink fast. They don’t, they don’t. Wow. I wore, I mean, I wore them during the pandemic a lot and I was like, Hey, I’m at home. Okay. It’s it is university gear. Yes. But rec sports students, if you’re new listening to this episode, whatever t-shirts red sports has, please make sure you get one.

Yes. One they’re gonna be free two. Um, they’re gonna be Nike. Exactly. And three, they’re going to. Excellent. They will last you all four years of your career. So Rex sports is a one now in terms of graphics. Who produces like graphically? I don’t think anybody can touch what we do in university housing. I will say that we got the best marketing team on the planet.

I will say that when you see the horns of home shirts yeah. When you see what we got coming up in the fall students, when you move in, wait till you see the new move in shirts. Wait till you see what we got going on there. I would say our t-shirts and our [00:12:00] marketing and graphics within housing and dining it’s top tier.

It’s top

Etinosa: tier. I look at our, was it 20, 21, 20 22? I don’t know the move shirt. I’m like, oh, the baby Bevo. Yeah, the baby Bevo gets me every time. Well, we’re

Brandon: retiring baby Bevo. Baby Bevo will be used in other things, but the stuff we’ve got coming up, I think you’re gonna like the new design. I can’t I’m working and made me keep my mouth shut on that one.

But I think you all are gonna like the, uh, shirts that you’re gonna get at moving with the new theme. I think home on the 40, okay. Is gonna be the new theme for this upcoming year. So that one’s gonna be I’m I’m, I’m pleased with the design that I saw the other day. So students keep an eye out for those, but yes, red sports.

You’re definitely gonna get, yeah. The best quality shirts. Now. I think housing and nighting, not only do we get good quality, but we got the best design. We got the best design. So when we have events like our music on the 40 program, we launched that this semester. Well, we, we kind of soft launched it in the fall, but you’ll start to see more in the upcoming year.

Live [00:13:00] music performances over at Adobe. We acquired Adobe since the last time. Oh my gosh. Yes, we met. Oh my goodness. And freshmen can actually stay at Adobe too. So, I mean, we’re gonna be doing a lot of music over there. Yeah. Because it’s a music themed building. Yeah. And so, yeah, this is it’s gosh, that we literally acquired

Etinosa: Adobe a whole new building since a whole new building.

Brandon: And we almost, what did you think about that? What do you think about that? Um,

Etinosa: funny enough, I don’t know. It was funny, cuz I came here as an intern and we didn’t have do. Right. And so it was one of those things that was like, Adobe’s just there and you’re just like, oh, it’s so close to campus. And then to be like, okay, it’s ours now.

I was like, all right. It was about time. , it’s a

Brandon: great building. I mean, if you, as students, if you never get a chance to live there, definitely drop by because there’s gonna be lots of programming. We’re gonna be doing a lot of live music over there. Uh, when you hear the phrase music on the 40, we got these brand new bucket hats that our marketing team created that we’re gonna have.

I think we’re gonna have some available that move in. Every time we’re gonna have music. There’s gonna be a music on the 40 with the Longhorn on the [00:14:00] back too. So we got the Longhorn and music on the 40 there’s lots of cool stuff. That’s gonna be happening. Not only then at move in, but over the course of the summer, too.

Yeah, because at orientation we got a, um, Scott and Billy and Elizabeth are gonna be doing a, uh, engagement activity in the evenings, I think on Tuesday nights. And so students, if you’re on campus at orientation drop by, uh, the housing and dining hangout, cuz we got some cool, uh, I think we’re doing trivia.

Okay. I think we’re doing the trivia. So. Stay tuned for that. Of course we’re gonna have catering and you know, our catering team is gonna be off the chain.

Etinosa: If you guys wanna know one thing, catering, talk

Brandon: about the catering catering, please talk about the cater, Longhorn, hospitality, Lord. Brag. I, I try new things and I’m like, wow, what did I have? The summer. Ugh, I can’t even remember, but it was so good. It [00:15:00] was Hispanic food Uhhuh. And I was like, I’ve never tried this in my life.

Yep. And the fact that I was able to try it in something that was so delicious and now I’m like, oh, I’m gonna go eat that some more. And that’s what I love about it. Like any event that I’ve gone to, there’s something always new there that I can try or they prepare it in a different way. Yes. That’s like mind blowing to me that I was like, I would’ve never,

Brandon: I will tell you.

When I first got here, I knew that our catering team was in onto something. When I thought I was eating. But I was eating a mushroom, really. They, they smoked and grilled a mushroom and seasoned it with barbecue, seasoning Uhhuh, and they sauce it. And I was just like, I’m mistakenly grabbed it cuz of the way they shreded it.

Yeah. And I was just loading up on it and I ate it and one of the chefs came over and, and shot out tire and y’all we do have chefs. So these are not. Me and ed to know some back there cooking. Right. We have chefs, uh, in our facilities. And so when you see a catered event from Longhorn hospitality, yeah.

That is a chef prepared meal. [00:16:00] Yes. Listen, when I tell you I ate that, uh, taco. With mushrooms. I’m like, are you kidding me? Oh yeah. It was like, it’s a Portobello. We just seasoned it this way and smoked it. And, and I, the other one was jackfruit. They went and took some jackfruit and I’m thinking, there’s no way they can make this taste like meat.

And they did. That’s crazy. And so for me, it’s when I started trying vegan and vegetarian options that I normally would never have tried. That’s when I knew Longhorn hospitality was really on to something. And so if you’re here this summer, uh, definitely want to try the, I think they’re doing smoke chicken during orientation.

You definitely want to do that. Um, you definitely want to try all of the, even the box lunches are gonna be really good too during orientation, but if you smell smoke in the air, barbecue smoke, particularly, and it’s coming from us, just keep walking towards that direction. Please do. You will not. I promise you, you won’t regret it cuz it is going to be in.

Credible. And then what we did during black history month, you know what I missed

Etinosa: chef Josh, you. [00:17:00] Oh, I missed it, but I

Brandon: heard such good things. Listen, let me just brag on it real quick. Shout out to chef Josh over in Longhorn hospitality. Uh, he’s been with, this is his first. This is the end of his first academic year.

Okay. Chef Josh took his grandmother’s cookbook. Wow. And customized all of these Southern Louisiana, South Carolina mm-hmm , uh, dishes y’all we had, uh, uh, authentic red beans and rice. Wow. We had some et two Fay. Wow. We had these smoked jerk chicken. We had jerk chicken wings. We had, um, I think we had some other seafood items in there.

The Mac and cheese was, was baked and triple cheesy. We had king cake. Wow. I mean, It was, it was, it was, it was a whole event and the live. Uh, the band was incredible and they’ll be back. So don’t worry if you’re, if you’re drooling right now, listening to this episode, it was that good. Yes, it was that much fun.

It was like a party because I got up there and spoke for 13 seconds. I was like, shout out to [00:18:00] everybody. Thank you. All. Let’s get back to the music. It was line dancing and Dr. Lilly said, this is the kind of stuff I want more often. So when the Dean and VP tell you go party, we party. So I love it. Be on the lookout for those

Etinosa: things.

My goal, this. This next academic year, I’m gonna be at everything as you should, as I should. I said, meeting canceled. I’m I need to go to this event. that’s

Brandon: what I’m talking about. Well, so while we’re, while we’re talking about it, I can tell you right now, students, you definitely wanna do two things. Number one, if you haven’t already done.

So go onto the, you to the orientation website. Mm-hmm . And download the schedule, especially if you’re gonna be moving to UT for the first time in the fall, or you’re going to your orientation session. Download the Longhorn welcome calendar because on August 27th. Okay. That is going to be the Longhorn fair mm-hmm and all of this food we were just talking about, guess who’s catering it.

Boo. Longhorn hospitality. So on August 27th, make sure you are at [00:19:00] the Longhorn fair go to every event. Yes, but specifically on the 27th, stop by, uh, there’s gonna be a lot of food. It’s gonna be like a carnival. It’s gonna be like the state fair, but here and the food is going to. Just as good. And then in October, you mark your calendar too, since you’re coming to everything.

Yes. I believe that Robert Valdez, um, and HFS a are Hispanic faculty staff association have confirmed October 14th. Mm-hmm is going to be the date for, um, the Hispanic heritage month celebration last year. That was a big party. Yes. I went to that one. That was a big party. Yes. And so we’ve already got the dates confirmed for that.

And so. Able to make it, or if you’re on your way to class, stop by sand Jack because, oh my. the food, the food, everybody was out the door, the music, the music,

Etinosa: the band, the dance. We had a DJ. Oh my God. It was, it was incredible. Yes. I didn’t wanna leave. I, I

Brandon: stayed the whole time. [00:20:00] I stayed. I came before to help set up.

I stayed until the end. I will tell you all, it is a opportunity of epic proportion. You don’t wanna miss any events where you see music on the 40 Longhorn hospitality doing the catering. Just don’t miss it. Just, just come. If you can make it be there. Please because we’re not gonna stream those things.

Yeah. Cause those are parties. Yes. Because there’s no formal agenda there. Yeah. All you will see is pictures on social media. And so make sure you’re following, uh, university housing and dining, uh, on, on Instagram and UT U Texas, uh, UT housing and U Texas dining, uh, or UT dining on, uh, Twitter. Uh, cause they got.

Dining has a separate, uh, Twitter profile. We missing anything else?

Etinosa: I don’t think we’re missing anything else. I mean, it’s crazy that summer is here. It’s crazy that we’re in the, almost in the thick of it. Um, I’m excited to meet everyone. I’m excited for where this podcast is gonna go.

Brandon: Oh my gosh. Um, y’all.

So, so as you’re, since that’s a normal, natural transition, [00:21:00] uh, we wanna tell you all that, you know, this is the last episode of this version of the podcast, because you know, after 30 episodes, we’ve taken a look back and we’ve learned we’ve grown. Um, but we’ve gotten some feedback. We’ve been working with a consultant.

We’ve been working with our marketing team and we’re like, we wanna relaunch, we wanna do something a little bit different. And so in the coming weeks, we’re gonna. Announcing that we got a new podcast coming out. We don’t have the name finalized yet, but once we get all of the details worked out and get a recording scheduled down, we promise you you’re gonna love the new direction that we’re going in.

You’re gonna love the guests that we’re gonna be bringing on and the new ideas. But, um, this is the last version of leadership innovations, ventures, and entrepreneurship. Yeah. So what do you think about, like, how does that make you feel safe? Um, I don’t know. Cause you came on as a guest. Yes. And then, then you became the

Etinosa: cohost.

I know, I feel like this is my Mo I come in and I’m like, let’s take it to a new level. So sorry. This was

Brandon: part of my fault. Listen, I was [00:22:00] here for it. That’s that was one of the things like after that episode I went, you know, it would be good. Ifdo enjoyed the show and everybody was like, yes, let her come on.

And so for me, I was like, it was a no brainer. And so now that we’ve had a chance to get our feel for each other and get a feel for how we do things, it’s like, alright, Live is good. Yes, we did it for three, you know, last couple of years we did it for 30 episodes and we’ve had I’ve, I’ve had fun doing this.

This was birthed out of a strategic planning meeting. And ironically in a couple weeks, I’m going back to that same strategic planning meeting to go we’re retiring live, but we’re elevating it to something different. Yes. So bittersweet in the sense that I really do like the, the essence of what we’ve done.

Right. But we got so many other opportunities. Yeah. That I just don’t think that. The way we do it. Yes. Fully captures it. And our friends here, uh, in, uh, liberal arts instructional technology studio have really helped us take it to another level and class up, uh, the production. And I, I get [00:23:00] to brag like, Hey, we just get to show up.

Right. They do the hard stuff. Right. Y’all do the hard stuff. Right. So shout out to them, but I’m looking forward to seeing where we go now. So.

Etinosa: And this is my PSA to everyone who’s listening. Like stick with us. It’s gonna be so exciting. Like Dr. Jones mentioned, like we have so many great ideas. There’s gonna be so many awesome guests.

I think even if you don’t know what we look like, you will know what we like. You’ll know

Brandon: like, oh yeah. You’ll know us, us you’ll know what you’ll hear us in line somewhere. Cause what’s cuz what’s coming is coming. I can’t wait. I, I cannot wait. And so we just wanted to get in the studio, get one last live episode in, but oh, you will see us live for real. Yes. Uh, coming in the next couple of months. And so we’ll drop all the, the YouTube, the.

Uh, Twitter and Instagram. I think the department has a TikTok account. Now I think, [00:24:00] uh, shout out to Ramis and Dr. Jones will be on the TikTok. Will I? Yeah. I mean, I, you may see me there, but will I actually have an account that has, you know, uh, the freshman class from last year made it a point to try that.

So I made it out the class I’m

Etinosa: with them now. And stay tuned for updates and announcements regarding the new show and the new direction we’re going in.

And, um, we look forward to having you all join us,

uh, with,

Etinosa: with the new iteration of what we’re doing.
