Brothers Hyrum Lewis (BYU \u2013 Idaho) and Verlan Lewis (Utah Valley University)\u2019s new *The Myth of Left and Right<\/strong>* attacks the \u201cessentialist\u201d view that \u201cleft\u201d and \u201cright\u201d are coherent political philosophies in favor of a \u201csocial\u201d view that \u201cleft\u201d and \u201cright\u201d are incoherent bundles of issue positions.  In this interview, Bryan Caplan and Robin Hanson find much common ground with the Lewis brothers, but still find some residual merit in the essentialist view.  Hanson analogizes ideology to gender identity: Some features of gender are social, but are all of them?!  Caplan maintains that the social theory is 85% true, but the authors stick with 100%.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bryan Caplan is a senior research fellow at the Mercatus Center and a professor of economics at George Mason University. He specializes in public economics, public choice, psychology and economics, public opinion, economics of the family and education, genoeconomics, and Austrian economics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Caplan is the author of The Myth of the Rational Voter: Why Democracies Choose Bad Policies<\/em>, named \u201cthe best political book of the year\u201d by the New York Times<\/em>, and Selfish Reasons to Have More Kids: Why Being a Great Parent Is Less Work and More Fun Than You Think. <\/em>He is currently writing a new book: The Case Against Education: <\/em>A Professional Student Explains Why Our Education System Is a Big Waste of Time and Money<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Caplan has appeared on ABC\u2019s 20\/20<\/em>, Fox News, and C-SPAN, and his articles appear in the New York Times<\/em>,the Washington Post<\/em>,the Wall Street Journal<\/em>, American Economic Review<\/em>, Economic Journal<\/em>, the Journal of Law and Economics<\/em>,and Intelligence<\/em>. He writes EconLog<\/em><\/a>, named by the Wall Street Journal<\/em> as a top economics blog. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
