[00:00:00] Kristen Wynn: Next time on Cancer Uncovered, an education and empowerment podcast. We continue learning from the Livestrong Cancer Institute’s oncology physician assistant, Lindsay Kozicz. Here’s a sneak peek of our discussion on the art of medicine.
[00:00:16] Lindsay Kozicz: Every single person that I take care of, Has a different story.
They have a different life. They have different support systems, different financial resources, different educational backgrounds. And that means that every single person needs to be treated differently. And that doesn’t necessarily mean that you give a different chemotherapy. It might, but It means that you take into account every single part of this person and that you artistically, creatively come up with a plan that is going to work for them.
And so that oftentimes requires getting resources that maybe you didn’t know existed before and knowing about what is available to us. How can we do this? One of the things that I realized about my job is that having connections. Understanding systems, how to navigate things, that accounts for a lot. And being able to help each individual patient get what they need, I think, really makes the art of medicine.
That’s what makes it possible. The creativity aspect of that is pretty cool. It’s pretty cool to think, well, we can treat this three different ways. But we have to take into account all of these things. Their comorbidities, their costs, their insurance, other meds they’re on, side effects. Those things are constantly, like, reeling in our minds.
And to me, that’s the way that you create, like, this beautiful picture of hopefully this person getting really good care and having the best quality of life that they can during a really, really difficult time.
[00:01:51] Kristen Wynn: So often, we don’t use the word creativity, as far as I can tell, with the way we talk about the work that we do.
And I think having to be creative is a really important note to make, I think, as students look at different careers and what’s possible within those careers and what it looks like on a daily basis. Well said. I love that. Don’t have to like, are you
[00:02:14] Lindsay Kozicz: okay? I’m fine. My cat, that’s my cat. Oh, is your cat okay?
I adopted a cat. I think so. He likes to play in the bathtub. The benefits of having a five month old kid. That’s it. There you go.
[00:02:28] Kristen Wynn: Make sure to tune in for more when this episode drops in a few weeks. In the meantime, thank you for listening and learning with us.
